Associate in Arts and Science Degree Requirements – Background
Here are some key facts you should understand.
- The courses required for the Associate in Arts and Science degree may be divided into two groups:
- General Education Requirements.
- Courses relating to your planned college major.
- The general education requirements for the Associate in Arts and Science degree are exactly the same for all students, regardless of your planned major – art, biology, computer science, history, psychology, or whatever.
- The Computer Information Systems suggested course of study consists of recommendations that will meet two goals:
- Satisfy the general education requirements for the Associate in Arts and Science degree at ICC.
- Prepare the student to transfer to a four-year college or university and major in computer science or computer information systems.
- The Computer Information Systems suggested course is based on the typical requirements for Computer Science majors and Computer Information Systems majors at four-year colleges and universities.
- You do not have to take every one of the recommended courses to earn the Associate in Arts and Science degree from ICC. However, if you skip one of the recommended courses, you may have to make it up by taking an equivalent freshman or sophomore level course at your four-year school after you transfer.
- Requirements do vary from one four-year school to another. Consult the catalog (or web site) of the four-year school to which you plan to transfer. If possible, talk to an advisor there to learn which courses you should take before you transfer.
Associate in Arts and Science Degree Requirements – Summary
The Associate In Arts and Science degree requirements are listed in the current ICC Catalog. You must satisfy these requirements to receive an Associate in Arts and Science degree from ICC. You must consult the catalog for details.
- The current ICC Catalog gives brief course descriptions for all courses offered at ICC (except for new courses created since the catalog was published).
- The brief description in the catalog may be insufficient; if you would like learn more about the course:
- Visit or phone the department that offers the course; the department office number and phone number are listed in the schedule of classes.
- Visit or phone an instructor who teaches the course.
Transfer verses Non-transfer Courses
- For each course description, the end of the heading line specifies the type of credit you will receive for the course.
- In general, only transfer credit (T. C.) courses count toward the Associate In Arts and Science degree.
- However, a maximum of four credit hours of occupational credit (O. C.) courses numbered 110 or above may be counted toward the Associate In Arts and Science degree.
