National Web Design Contest – awards ceremony

Awards for this competition were distributed as part of the SkillsUSA national awards ceremony. Roughly 15,000 people were in attendance in Kemper arena when the web design awards were handed out. Here are a few of the photos. I also plan to post a few videos of the event.

National Web Design Contest – debriefing session

Immediately after the post-secondary competition ended, we held a debriefing session for both secondary and post-secondary. We had 43 teams in attendance. In addition to discussion the contest and addressing questions, several WOW spirit awards were announced. The photos below are a few I took during the debriefing session. We also recorded the entire session (video) and I may make that available later.

National Web Design Contest – post-secondary competition

Thursday we ran a similar contest for post-secondary students. There were 15 teams competing at this level. Again, they competed in teams of two. They were also asked to complete 6 challenges with an emphasis on web standards, accessibility, and JavaScript. They also had from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. to complete their work. These files were then collected and uploaded to a secure spot on one of my servers. Immediately after this, we held a debriefing session. Those photos are listed separately. The photos below were taken during the post-secondary competition.

National Web Design Contest – secondary competition

On Wednesday, we had 28 teams of 2 students competing at the secondary (high school) level. These are some of the photos I took during that competition. The competition lasted from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Students were asked to address 6 separate challenges during that time. Once the competition was concluded, I uploaded all their work to a secure spot on one of my servers and notified the judges so they could begin the review of the pages developed. The contest stressed web standards, accessibility, and had a JavaScript component this year.

National Web Design Contest briefing

I helped supervise the National WOW Web Design contest in Kansas City, Missouri, last week. The contest started on Tuesday (June 22, 2010) with an overview for those competing. We also had a quiz (serving as a tie breaker in the event it was needed). These are a few of the photos from that session.

Sign typos

I encountered a number of typos on various signs during the competitions last week in Kansas City. Those who know me, know how easy it is for me to introduce a typo. Perhaps someone should employ a proof reader next year? Here are a couple (yes there were others). At least those supervising the computer programming contest tried to fix theirs…
